Unpacking is Tough Stuff! [Jun. 14th, 2009|06:01 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | content]

Taking a few for a breather here, we have been working all weekend to unpack things & get settled and I need a little bit of a break. :) You never really know just how much STUFF you've really got until you have to move it... and then unpack it all.

I did pare down a LOT of the clothes in my closet though. I have taken to wearing a lot of the tank tops or "basic tees" from Old Navy, they're comfy and lightweight and good plain tees, so I got rid of a lot of my oversized tee shirts that just did not fit. Also got rid of a lot of things I either don't wear often or have *ahem* grown out of but held onto for, ehrm, motivation. ;) Ended up getting rid of four bags of stuff from the closets PLUS a bag full of extra hangers we never use anyway. Pretty good, I'd say!

One of the things I love about our new location is the wildlife. Mostly birds, of course... although a lot of bugs, too. D: We have seen TWO huntsman spiders here at the new place, after we got a ton of rain. Lots of mosquitoes, which in turn means lots of dragonflies. The cat loves to watch the dragonflies at the sliding glass door, making weird chirrup noises at them that I never heard from him at the old house.

Of the birds, we have seen many different types: herons and egrets a-plenty, to be sure. We have great blues herons, great white egrets, cattle egrets, and snowy egrets. We've had grackles (of course) and doves, we've had red-winged blackbirds and, to my surprise, killdeer! I hadn't seen a killdeer since I lived in Michigan and would visit Lake Michigan over the summer. I didn't even realize we had killdeer in Florida. We have four outside of our house! There is also a little eastern phoebe that sits on a power line on the road right outside of our subdivision, looking all cute every morning. :)
For raptorbirds, we have seen osprey (because our pond behind our house does have fish) and I've even seen some swallowtailed kites. I had never seen those before!

And of course we have turtles in the pond, as well as frogs hopping all over the place. (The frogs leave little presents for us to find on the sidewalk in the morning, eww.) This place is just teeming with good ol' Florida wildlife and I've really been enjoying it. ;)

Alright, to make some dinner, and back to work! Oy..

Little Blessings [Nov. 2nd, 2008|03:54 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | amused]

Today we woke up plenty early, but got working on things (cleaning up the house, etc) and ended up leaving a little late for church. Since we were out yesterday and didn't get home in time for the Saturday night service, we planned to go to the 9:30am one.

We probably had about 15 minutes to make a 20 minute drive, and so of course, as fate would have it, we caught the drawbridge just as the light turned red and the gates came down.

This isn't necessarily a BAD thing; worse than being caught on the bridge during an opening is being caught OFF the bridge, waiting to get onto the bridge, during an opening. See, when you're not on the bridge yet, you're just stuck in traffic. When you're on the bridge, though, you at least have a nice view, not to mention a fantastic breeze.

I put the car into park and turned it off, and Joe said he saw dolphins. Three of them! Great, something to watch while we're on the bridge!

We watched the dolphins for a while, and they were a lot more active than usual. Some of them were jumping out of the water, something we don't usually see them doing.

At one point, the dolphins were pushing their heads up out of the water... and something came flying off of their mouths. And again... and again...
They were PLAYING with their FOOD! The dolphins were throwing fish into the air!! XD

It was nice to have something amusing to watch, something we haven't seen the dolphins do before, at least not in the wild! So even though we were running late, seeing the dolphins play so much helped to relieve the stress. :)

Oldest City Wanderings [Sep. 21st, 2008|09:09 pm]

[mood | sleepy]

Joe and I had a wonderful Sunday. We went downtown for breakfast, I got a cinnamon roll and Joe had a ham biscuit at The Bunnery. Can't beat their giant cinnamon roll for only $2. :d We were just finishing up and getting ready to head to church for our Bible study when in walked our friends, David and Song. So we chilled for another couple of minutes and had fun chatting. :)

Then we went to church, and walked in just after they closed the door but before they started the study lesson-- our group always chats for a good 15 to 20 minutes before study. :P And WOW had it grown! We got the last two chairs. There were a lot of people there this time; including the teachers probably about 10 couples! So, that was cool! We did some studying of the story of Jonah, and had a good time. They're such a fun group and we all laugh a LOT together.

Afterward we went to Beachcomber for lunch, where Joe and I split a burger and fries. I've been keen on splitting plates of food lately, and not just because I've been taking the Hydroxycut that surpresses a little bit of an appetite-- for one, it's cheaper to split food, and for two, it's every bit as filling and you don't have to worry about carrying around leftovers for the rest of the day. Even so, we couldn't finish our fries, and we had a little box of those. D: But they were good, and the burger was soooo tasty. First time I -didn't- get fish there!

We headed on down to Fort Matanzas to walk around and uggggh at all the spiders as usual. :P Cut to spare ramblings of spiders... No Photos. )

Along the boardwalk, Joe spotted a raccoon. Because of rains all day yesterday, part of the area had flooded, as swampy areas tend to do. ;) Since the trail at Matanzas is all boardwalk, this wasn't a hindrance to the hike itself, but, as we were walking along, Joe heard shuffling and there under the scrub was a raccoon, foraging for food. We snuck up on him (I took my shoes off on the boardwalk 'cause my flipflops made so much noise!) and I snapped a few photos. Of course, again I wished my camera did a better job. Ah well, some day.

We headed on home, Joe read his book while I took a nap and then the cat walking up my leg, curling up on my butt and then purring, was what woke me up. D: Joe made quesadillas for dinner, and we went back out downtown to walk some more. Saw David & Song again, then we kept walking down to the plaza. While we were walking toward the waterfront a song caught my ear- not unusual for the bars and restaurants to have live music on the weekends but I had never realized that the Trinity Episcopal Church on the plaza had live music! Turns out, they have this whole program called YITrinity where they feature young artists & musicians. The musicians play for a weekly cafe on Sunday nights; they're also organizing art displays to be shown on the First Friday Art Walks. Pretty cool! The guys there talked with us a little bit, some of the high school girls that were there hanging out came over and loved on Reo for a bit. Then we finished our walk, the weather was PERFECT tonight. Just so cool and breezy along the waterfront. :)

I will leave you with some photos from today. NO SPIDER PHOTOS under the cut; I am going to be making a post to [info]arachnerds if you want to see my spider pics there. :)

2 moar pics! )

Bits and Bots [Mar. 2nd, 2008|08:31 pm]

[mood | tired]

My first day off in a while, woo hoo!! :P

I thoroughly enjoyed today. Started out with leftover pancakes from our breakfast at IHOP yesterday, and we went to church. Church was great as usual. And our Bible study after the service was fun too, we have a tendency to wander in conversation but that's part of what makes it enjoyable. :)

After church we met up with [info]painteddog and [info]jooshie at the Alligator Farm and buzzed around there, then went to Pizza Garden for lunch. They were out of their thick crust (hey, it's Bike Week, and apparently the bikers want their thick crust! hah) but that was a good excuse to try their calzones. Joe and I split one, and it was gooood. :)

Then we went down to the Matanzas inlet and poked around in the water. Joe brought a net and we caught things. Everything from a little worm of some sort, to a stupid clam that wouldn't bury itself after we caught it, to tons of hermit crabs and little sand crabs, and even a small fish of some kind. I won the "biggest catch" by capturing a spiny spider crab, and Josh took pictures of it. That thing looked gross!! But it was cool. I actually picked it up, Brenda you would be proud. :) But it had smallish claws so I wasn't too scared. Hah!

We came back home and Angyl and Josh got to meet Kip; he's still nervous around new people. But I think he smelled their cats on them so he didn't mind so much. He was skittish at first but then just hid around the couch/stairs and watched them.

So now I feel like I need a day to rest from my day of rest. XD It was good to get out and see the Matanzas area, I always love going down there. And the water was warm enough that we were able to walk barefoot in the waves. (We walked around the *interior* of the inlet; I'm sure the ocean itself would've been far too cold!)

I'm not ready for the week to start yet. I feel like I have so much I need to do. At least tomorrow should be quiet because I was already half-way done with the daily work that I *need* to work on; there are some small clean-ups I need to do, and I want to take the time to write some things up for the new hire. Honestly, I'm just ready to start my own personal business.

Oh! Speaking of said personal business... today they advertised for an Easter Egg Hunt at our church, in the bulliten. I asked the lady coordinating it if they'd be interested in having either Skittle or Adie (or possibly both) attending. We thought it would be cute to have the naughty fox stealing the eggs!! She loved the idea and asked that I e-mail her photos of the characters so they can figure out how to work it in. The kids love stuff like that! And Skittle was such a hit at the Halloween event, I thought it'd be nice to have her return. I know it's an unusual thing in this area to have people mascotting outside of Disney, but hey. I love entertaining the kids and plus suiting is just tons of fun. :P So you all will get to see Easter photos of Adie, or Skittle, or both!! :)

OMG SQUEE! [Feb. 11th, 2008|03:00 pm]

[mood | awwww!]

I mean, squirrel!!!

The girl who does tech support for our company brought in a baby squirrel with her. Her son found it because the nest fell out of the tree, and the cats got to the baby. :( But it is still alive and relatively unharmed (it had a tiny scratch and that was all, surprisingly!) and so my coworker has been feeding it and warming it since Friday. She brought it with and has it on a small heating pad on her desk. It is sooooo cute! *squee* :)

I never usually have my camera with me at work, but it was still in my purse after the weekend so I took a few pics. I didn't use the flash (didn't want to scare the poor guy) so they turned out kind of blurry, but I'll unload the camera tonight and post the pics some time. :)

I met Joe for lunch at Chick-Fil-A this afternoon (he had a couple coupons for free sammiches, mmm) and then stopped at Hobby Lobby next door to pick up thread. I got two spools of the heavy duty stuff. Hope it's enough. :P

Also, Saturn <3
I was driving out of the subdivision where my office is located and a guy driving in waved at me, because he was driving a silver Saturn toward my silver-blue Saturn. XD I love Saturn owners, they're the coolest don'cha know!! =)

Sexy Sushi for Sexy People [Jan. 6th, 2008|10:58 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | tired]

Here is where we ended up eating dinner:
http://www.sushijo.com/

Wooo sushi. A little hole-in-the-wall sort of place in Boynton Beach that had excellent (if not a little pricey) sushi and a nice atmosphere. And it was right up the road from the beach. :)

The Morikami gardens were really nice! It was more of a botanical garden run by, er, older people... than it was a cultural thing. They did have some cultural events going on for the New Year festival - they had the drummers and a guy in a lion (dragon) costume dancing to the drumming. They had all manner of crafts and games for the kids too. The gardens were very pretty and well-kept; I have some very nice photos. A beautiful atmosphere. The one down-side is that, because the focus was more of a museum's display than a cultural experience, their food was not a main focal point; the festival itself had hamburgers and hot dogs which we didn't really go near. Their cafe only offered California Rolls as far as sushi went, and had a few other things too, but not enough that we felt the need to eat there. I really think they should have a sushi bar and/or ramen counter that you can access from inside or outside, since you have to pay to get into the grounds. It'd certainly draw a bit more business- not that they need more business, this place was packed for the festival! ^_^

It was neat to see a part of Florida I'd not yet been to. I'd never been farther south than Kissimmee, and so to drive the Florida turnpike and see some more of the state was fun. I was amused to see, when we drove past one city (I think it was arount Port St. Lucie) there was a landfill, but the topmost layer of trash hadn't been covered over at all, and there were literally HUNDREDS of vultures flying overhead. The sky was dark with them!! We also saw, driving on the Osceola Parkway, some sandhill cranes, which I'd never seen before. Something else I enjoyed was seeing some beach that wasn't St. Augustine beach - I've only ever been to Florida's beaches around St.A - whether the beach down the street from us, or Crescent Beach which is my favorite to go swimming at... we haven't been to any other ocean beaches in Florida, not even Cocoa. So to see Boynton Beach (which was not crowded in the least) was pretty neat; the water there has a much greener color than ours does up here. (Ours is more of a deep, dark blue.) I can only imagine what the place would look like in summertime; alas, that would be when it is most crowded, too.

I officially love downtown Delray Beach though - it's a cute little beachside town that reminds me a lot of the Mediterranean beach town I got to visit in Spain. It was a neat little place that, if we ever have a weekend excuse for a trip again, we might check out again. And Boynton was really nice too. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole area. :)

The drive home was long - about 4.5 hours because we took A1A up from Boynton Beach to get to 95, and we stopped at a channel to watch the sunset - but we made it eventually. (Actually got in around 10:30, so not too late at all!) So now I am going to go crash into bed and spend tomorrow at work again - I have stuff coming up that will require me to put in a couple hours of overtime each week, ick - but I feel a lot better after our weekend in central and south Florida. :)

Birdz Halp [Dec. 27th, 2007|10:07 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | curious]

I heard a *thunk* on the window a little while ago and saw on the ground a poor little bird flapping around. It then lay still and I wasn't sure if it was okay or not. D:

I went out to check on it and took some paper towels with me. I wrapped it up gently and held it for a few moments, then opened the towels. The bird tried to fly off but could only flap a bit. So I put it in the sago palm for a minute so I could go in and find a box.

My coworker found a small box (just smaller than a shoebox) I could put the bird in, and I wrapped some rubber bands around the lid. So now it is inside with me. I will take it back out in a short while to see if it is able to fly off; I didn't want to leave it around and risk a cat or a hawk eating it. :(

I checked the bird and it seems alright, as far as limbs go; the wings and legs did not appear to be broken at all. It is probably just stunned, as it was leaning to the side a little bit, up against my hand. I hope it is okay. :(

I can't figure out what kind of a bird it is though. I am such a noob when it comes to some types of birds. Anyone care to help identify it? Its body is charcoal, with a lighter grey belly, a black tail and a black cap. Its eyes are a deep red. It has rust coloring on the underside of the tail. It doesn't have a sparrow beak, more like a warbler's, except maybe a little longer. It's not a very "round" bird, it looks kind of lean. I tried looking on WhatBird but it was going slow and it wasn't coming up with my bird anyhow. :P

If I end up bringing it home with me (that is to say, if it doesn't fully recover by the time work is over) then I will take photos, but in all likelyness, this little guy will be alright and on his way home before it's time for me to leave here. :)

EDIT: I just took the box back out, about half an hour later, and opened it up. The bird fluffed up, looked around, and then flew off. Yay! ^_^

Stuff, and things, and even more stuff. [Sep. 27th, 2007|07:34 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | cheerful]

Work's been keeping me busy. Already picking up a little bit of overtime; ond of the month means numbers crunch-time and since I've got the hang of entering information, I stayed late last night (and a little late tonight) to help get stuff in. I felt a little bit bad for "slowing down" the other girl at a point where they generally like to have as much in the computer as they can, but, they now have twice the production power, so, it's all good. ;)

I can't believe tomorrow is Friday already. My first week of work has flown by. It's so easy to get through a workday and I still feel like I have physical energy when I come home. I'm not good for much as far as brain processing goes (which is why I haven't been keeping up with LJ either) but Joe and I have been taking evening walks, and I've been trying to keep up with the dishes and laundry. (Which reminds me I have to go switch it...)

There are still no downsides to the job that I can see. Which is great! I am going to enjoy this job so much. I am so glad I finally have something I'm enjoying, where I feel I'm being properly compensated for my work. I still have another day to go, and already I've earned more than I ever did in a typical week at my old job. As much as I miss it, I am glad to be done with it too.

Joe and I went to walk on the beach this evening, and when we got down there it looked a little dirtier than usual. After a few minutes of walking with the dog, who started sneezing a lot, we noticed our noses were tickling, too. Turns out, we've got a case of red tide. Uh oh! Algael bloom, go away! I hope it doesn't last too long. No wonder my allergies have been icky lately. ;P But on our short walk, Joe found some sea beans washed up on the seashore. There was a lot of trash, too, which means it must've been storming out over the Atlantic, even though we haven't been seeing too much of it here.

On the other hand, we DID get caught in a rainstorm the other day. We were walking the dog around the block, and were standing and admiring one particular cloud. We saw a rainbow in it, and then part of it turned blue. (Yes, blue!) We watched as it started billowing up, and then continued our walk. Well, that billowing should have been our clue to turn around and go back home! We were about halfway around the block (and it's a large block, about 1/3 mile) when the cloud just broke open, and we were drenched within seconds. It was literally a driving rain - when we got back inside, only our fronts were wet because we'd been walking *into* the rain! It was kind of amusing, because we passed a LOT of people out walking; it was just such a nice evening, everyone else was out enjoying it too. We all got quite a bit of a rude surprise! :P

In other news, it must be getting colder up north. I have been making a habit of eating my lunch at the pier park, right down the road from my office, and taking a walk or reading for a short while after eating. Today I noticed a LOT of monarch butterflies flying southward. It was like a steady stream of butterflies just floating downwind. They were so neat to watch.

Mmm, so now I'm going to continue my nightly tradition of staying away from the computer. ;) I'll be reading my book this evening, possibly playing some Pokemon with my husband. I really do need to post my friends code (though we only are ever on when we go to the pizza place which has wireless internet) so those of you who play can catch me on. :)

Hope everyone else is doing well!

Spiders! [Sep. 16th, 2007|08:00 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | curious]

(Note: Links to photos go to other web sites, not my own photos.)

Joe and I went on a walk today at Fort Matanzas, and saw lots and lots and lots of spiders. EVERYwhere. I normally hate spiders, but these were all in webs and off the walk enough that it took a stick to be able to poke them with. :P Here's a list of what we saw:

Golden Silk Orb Weavers (banana spiders)
LOTS of these all over the place. And a lot of them were up in the canopy! They ranged in size from teeny to big enough to span my hand. A few of them were so far up, their webs were just constantly billowing in the slight breeze. One was even eating a beetle that'd gotten in its web. Neat!

Spiny Orb Weavers
I *LOVE* these guys. :D There were tons of them all over the park. I even found a different variety where its butt was more raised and it didn't have the red spikes like this. O_o Of COURSE this was the one time I forgot my camera... but this is the type it was:
Spined micrathena

Argiope Spiders
We only saw one of these, kinda tucked back in the brush. I love their webs!!

Redfemured orb weavers
There were a LOT of these guys around too, and if [info]walkertxkitty hadn't posted asking about them, I wouldn't have known what they were! A bunch of them all over the place. Really neat to see though!

Finally, we saw a couple of strange spiders that I've been trying for the longest time to identify but have yet to come across. It had a strange, almost erratic web (we saw an abandoned web first and thought it might've been a neglected orb weaver's web) and it sat in an unusual pose. It hung facing downward, with its first four legs tucked in, and the hind four legs reaching upward. The markings on the back of it were almost reminiscent of an old man's face and beard. Its pose reminded me of a Hindu god, sitting in that "lotus" pose with its arms raised.
Like I said, it was the ONE TIME we forgot to grab the camera, and we came across something cool that I really wanted to photograph. Perhaps next Sunday I will be able to go back and get another look at him, and a picture. There were tons of spiders to be seen, and plenty of great photo opportunities.

I find it strange, that I am so scared of spiders, and yet amazed and intrigued by them. I love watching them and looking at them, but don't want to get near them. :P

Photoz! And a spider O_O [Aug. 28th, 2007|11:04 pm]

First some happy pics. They're small so I won't cut them, there are just a few. :)

The world's most pitiful dog:

Reasons I love Florida:

Reasons I hate Florida. WARNING: Spider. )

Anyone know what kind of a spider that is? O_o

Edit: Found it! It's a tropical orb weaver, or Eriophora ravilla. And gross. :D

Edit 2: I also found out more info on this type of spider. Apparently it spins a web every evening, traps bugs all night, and then dismantles it in the morning. We'd had a spider spinning a web between the side of the house and the brush - a span for maybe two people to walk abreast - and he always looked pretty neat but I wanted to see him in daylight. I have yet to see him during the day though! Turns out these guys take down their webs and hide under a leaf during the day. Here's a pic I have of the one in the web that is a regular out in front of our house. )

Doberman Pinscher

Doberman pinscher for [info]colors_of_k9s. I wish I could have done better by it, I had plans to finish him up in colored pencil, but I had to rush it as the deadline is... today. :P

The Lion And The Lamb

And a cute doodle I would like to eventually finish up. :)

Worked ten hours today! Ouch! And that's not counting the time I had to just hang out downtown before work. Oy... but I got to watch birds again. :)

The funniest part was when I was watching an osprey through my binoculars... I was intent on watching him fishing. Then I put down the binoculars, and there was a little ruddy turnstone - possibly one of the guys from yesterday morning? - all alone, sitting on the fort wall next to me. Squeeecute. :) Since I had a sandwich with me in my bag I decided to share a little bit. He seemed to get excited when he heard the rustling of my sandwich bag. :P I gave him a tiny little bit of my crust, but he was too nervous to take it from my hand. Instead, I tossed little tiny crumbs to him. And also found out ruddy turnstones don't care much for Smuckers jelly. :P

It's been great, and relaxing and calming to be able to go sit on the fort wall in the mornings. A nice quiet time. :)

Now, bedtime. Only thing left to drink with dinner in the house was a pomegranate-raspberry wine cooler and so I am *really* sleepy. *wobble*

Birds Birds Everywhere! [Aug. 9th, 2007|10:52 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | sleepy]

I think my hormones have gone nuts, because stupid little things make me want to cry. Today and yesterday both. So instead, I will write about happy things, like Florida wildlife. :)

Yesterday, Joe and I went for a walk on the beach. I was moody then, too, but every time I'm moody and brooding while I walk on the beach, God sends something along to make me smile. In the past, it's been a shark tooth. (I'd get real frustrated/snippy about something, look down, and there's a shark tooth at my feet. BAM! No more moodiness. Smiles!) But this time, it was something else, something I couldn't take home with me.

As we were standing on the shore, I watched an osprey flying toward us from the north. He was watching the water. Then, he hesitated directly in front of us, out over the water, about fifteen to twenty feet out (just past the few breakers there were) and took a dive. He caught a fish, and did the cute little *shakeoff* I love watching them do.

It's hard to be grouchy after watching such a beautiful bird. :)

This morning, I brought binoculars with me down to the fort wall, and was able to watch the gulls, terns, and osprey (three of them!) fishing. No dolphins, which was somewhat disappointing, but I did have a visit from four little ruddy turnstones. They flew in next to me on the fort wall, and started picking at little bits and pieces of debris on the wall. One of the four started getting really bossy with the other three. Then they started chasing sea slaters (nasty little pillbug ocean bug thingies that run away real quick) trying to catch and eat them. They weren't afraid of me in the least, especially since I was just sitting still; they came so close several times that I could have reached out and touched them. Oh, how I wished I had my camera!

Now that I have my tiny pair of binoculars (Joe found for $7.50 at Target the other night!) I will be doing more birdwatching. I have also started scribbling notes in my bird book about when/where I've seen some of these birds. :)

Wow, this entry took like half an hour to write, and now it's almost midnight. I gotta get up early again tomorrow!! So I guess I will head to bed... Saturday I get to sleep in but we're having a double-birthday-bash so we'll be staying up late. :)

Edit: Also forgot to mention another wild critter we saw the other day. Joe and I came home and heard a parrot-like squawk in the tree out front. We found its source: a wild quaker parrot! (Yes, we DO have those here! Quakers... gone wild!) XD

It's a beautiful morning! [Jul. 24th, 2007|09:08 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | calm]

I got up early this morning, with Joe. Yes, on my day off. He appreciated it though. Much as I wanted to go back to sleep, I got up to use the bathroom but could tell by the way he said "oh" when I told him I was going back to bed, not getting up, that he wanted my company this morning. So I got up anyhow... after all, being my day off, I can always go back to sleep; he can't!

This morning we plotted how best to rig the cage to capture the kittens. However, we didn't see them out by the road. It could be that it's just too early in the morning still; I remember at our last apartment, there were feral kittens, but this early in the morning they were more likely to hang out together and bat at the bush limbs under the bushes, than to wander around any. So the kittens just may not be out yet.

Joe had left a small bowl over there with water in last night, and the water was gone this morning. I left a small bit of kitten kibble (as that's what we feed the ferrets) in the bowl, next to a bush. If the kittens are indeed still there (and I doubt, really, that anything happened to them overnight) then they will learn that Good Things come from this bowl, and that will make their capture much easier.

So, since I'd already walked halfway there to check and see if the kittens were about, I walked all the way out to the beach. It is a *beautiful* morning this morning! Rain clouds are moving in, and those make for the prettiest clouds out over the ocean. There were big puffy clouds that towered high into the sky, with smaller streaky clouds lower, in front of them. With the sun having just risen, it was a beautiful sight to see. :) I did take some photos, but, of course, photos never do these things justice. Especially not on my camera. :P

Some things I found while walking included: two pretty little scallop shells, one of which was entirely black! A couple of striking purple coquina shells; usually they don't interest me too much but these were just really pretty. :) Also a blue and tan starfish; I found two of these but only brought back the one that was dead. :P And a pretty spotted crab shell. These are the things I brought back home with me. Other things I saw but obviously did not bring back: lots of sandpipers and pelicans, also various little crabs! There were the usual sand crabs running back into their holes as I approached, but then I found some tiny little crabs that blended in with the sand. I managed to capture one and take a photo of it before it scurried off my hand and dropped back onto the sand. I also saw several sea turtle nests marked off. Neat! A couple of the nests had little signs saying "adopted parents" and listed the name of a person who had donated money to help fund the sea turtle patrol program. Cute. :)

I walked out about a mile, and then heard a distant rumble of thunder (which in Florida doesn't necessarily mean the storm is coming your way) but I figured it would be best to head back home, especially since I had the camera with me, and didn't have a plastic bag in my pocket. Didn't want to take any chances. I got back home alright without any bad weather moving in (in fact, it is still sunny) and still no sign of the kittens. At least I'd had a nice walk, especially since I hadn't done my yoga this morning.

I have a busy day ahead of me. Major cleaning to be done, because chores have just not been getting done. Both Joe and I seem to keep busy and these messes tend to sneak up on us. :( Ah well. I have dual reason for "deep cleaning" of the house today - not just to get it all cleaned, but also because this Saturday we are having a yard sale! We were going to try and have one here, but my boss (who is also the head of the townhouse association here) said that we would have to present a written request to the board for approval before having a yard sale. O_o So the wife-boss offered to let us use their yard. XD Which is a fine idea, because their house is only two streets over. :P She said she has some things she could stand to get rid of - some old furniture and stuff - and she is actually kind of excited about this. :D She kept going on and on about how she's got garage sale signs from the last time they had one, and she wants to run an ad in the paper, and all this other stuff.... I think she's looking forward to it. :P So we're going to round up stuff we don't need - I have some clothes, some old craft stuff I bought but never ended up using, especially from the wedding. (You know when you're having a DIY wedding, you buy up tons of stuff on sale, then use what you can!) So that will be lots of JUNK out of our house and hopefully a little bit of cash in our pocket. And whatever we don't sell, we will just throw back into the car and take to the Goodwill. And, since I have the day off on Saturday, Joe and I will go fishing in the afternoon. XD

So, anyway.... here I go, diving in to the day! Whee!

Hmmm. [May. 20th, 2007|08:12 pm]

[mood | sleepy]

Today was a really nice day. We got to spend the morning at church (and it was our turn to bring the snack for Bible study; we got bagels from the local bagel place along with honey-almond cream cheese spread to go with them, and orange juice! Mmm!) and then afterward we got to go to lunch with my two ex-roomies at Chili's. It was a good time, spent some time catching up with them and just chatting. My roommate Holly recently had a baby (okay, "recently" as in "three months ago") and little Lily is such an adorable little chub. :3 She didn't fuss too bad - she was sleepy but her mommy knew all the tricks for helping to put her to sleep.

After lunch, Joe and I wandered around Barnes & Noble to digest our lunch - we'd hardly recovered from the bagels before going to lunch so we hardly ate, but needed to digest it - and saw some neat books we wanted to get but didn't fit in the $10 price range, to be covered by what's left on our gift card. We don't exactly have money for books right now, as we're about to take a week out of town.

When we were done wandering around B&N, Joe and I went back out to the island and went to our usual weekend hangout, the Alligator Farm. We chilled on the little porch outside of the meeting room they have, sitting in the comfy rocking chairs they have there. We just talked for a while about all sorts of stuff, fed the gators a little bit, etc.

Then we made the rounds, took some photos of the birds (and a couple of videos - you have GOT to hear the noises the egrets make!) and checked up on all of the little baby chicks. They're getting big, fast! And the little cygnet (baby swan) was almost the size as Mom and Dad. It was still very downy, but BIG! To think it was a fluff-ball, a small enough size to fit in my hand, only a month or so ago. Lots of activity at the gator farm.

We stopped at the beach on our way home to take some photos. Joe and I got my mom a beachy picture frame from a shop downtown for her mother's day present (we're just bringing the presents with us rather than ship them) and I was going to put a picture of Joe and I at the beach in it. The last time we'd tried taking photos, there was something in the lighting (I swear!) that made us both look not-our-best. But it was gorgeous and sunny today, and we were both *feeling* better, so we were brighter in the pictures we took today. :) We got a couple of cute ones.

This evening Joe and I have just been relaxing a bit. I think I may work on the web site for the store, as I need to get more "vacation hours" in. Oy. This isn't going to be much fun. Oh well...

Owwie... [May. 3rd, 2007|09:44 am]

[mood | sleepy]

I did my exercises this morning, including the new ones I'd added in, only the new ones I did a more reps instead of just two or three. They were meant to work my thighs and my "glutes" and boy did they work my glutes - I can feel it in my butt! :P

In all seriousness though, I think it's great how I can add these new exercises in and I can feel them working. My calves are visibly strengthening! My thighs, a little bit too, but not so much visibly because they have so much padding. My arms... eh. Those are an after-thought but they *are* becoming stronger, slowly. (More so from leash-corrections with the dog trying to get him to heal, or at the least not tug the leash tight - when we walked the beach yesterday I tried to keep him from pulling out to the end of the retractable leash.)

I thought I would be ready to start running this weekend but I guess not. My asthema is still a little too picky about how long I'm active. I did my jog-around-the-living-room routine and was aiming for five minutes but only got to three before I had to stop because of the asthema. But, thats better than I was! Used to only be able to do a minute and a half. Slowly, it's improving!

This morning I saw a male orchard oriole in our tree out front. He was pretty! I'd never seen one before. Had to go look him up in our bird book. :)

Well, I'm waiting for my ride in to work, so... I guess I'd better go collect my lunch and be ready!

Other Sunday Things [Mar. 11th, 2007|10:31 pm]

[mood | happy]

Joe and I had a good day today. :)

After the church service, we stayed for Sunday school. There is a "young marrieds" class that meets at 10:45, and it was pretty good! Normally I feel awkward at Bible study groups but this one wasn't bad. It was REAL small - only two other couples were there this time, in addition to the (older, parent-age) couple that was teaching the class. Everyone was friendly, and easy enough to talk to. We could really identify more with these than with the "young career-age" group we'd gone to, that my ol' college pals are in. And there was also much distraction - while there was a serious time for lesson, there was also a lot of laughing. Also something that impressed me about the group was how welcoming they were - we got an e-mail from the leaders a few hours after getting home, with a class calander and a lunch invitation. :)

We decided to stop in at the Alligator Farm for lunch. They have pretty good food at their concession stand. Joe got a burger, and I got a hot dog, and we split some fries. Then we walked around. I fascinated a couple of tamarins (little bitty monkeys) with my Diet Coke bottle - they were so curious! They looked at the bottle, then watched me take a drink, then head-tilted. XD We walked through the swamp, where there are LOTS of the (wild!) great egrets building their nests. It was amusing to watch them. One egret would get a stick, then had to place it just so on the branches, and then he'd stand on it for a minute to test it out. Another egret would go over to an empty nest that'd already been built, and raid it for sticks to bring back to his mate. There were so MANY of them, and all so beautiful!! Finally, Joe and I walked over to watch the African birds. The Farm has a bunch of Cape Vultures, *beautiful* birds, and intelligent, too! We sat on a picnic bench in the play area to watch the vultures, and two of them came right up to the window (one of those "kids viewing window" things) and watched Joe and I. Apparently, my Diet Coke bottle was fascinating to them, too - they'd watch where ever I moved the bottle. In so doing, I made them dance to the tribal music on the speakers. XD GORGEOUS birds up close, and a lot of fun to watch. While we were there, a little girl (maybe four or five?) came up to Joe and I and asked what the bird was ("that's a vulture!") and if the vulture was mean. I told her to ask the bird! She asked, "Vulture, are you a mean vulture?" She was so cute. :P

Then Joe and I came home, and he did some yard work - we're preparing a small place for an itty bitty homegrown veggie garden - and I took a nap on the hammock in the sun. ^_^ Okay, I didn't just sleep - I also worked with Reo in the backyard for some of his training. He is learning "look" pretty well but is VERY stubborn about "heel" - even when I try to get him to target my hand (with a treat!) he will not do it when I give the command to heel - telling him to heel makes him run off. That part will take some work.

After that, we took Reo downtown for a walk, so he could work through some distractions again. We practiced our "sit and stay" quite a bit, and we even had a chance to test his "sit and LOOK" while another dog walked past. He sat, he looked at me, and not once did he try to go after the other dog! It was good that, once I got his attention, he did what I wanted him to, instead of going toward the other dog in an effort to play. He may be trainable yet. ;) After all, we are just starting!

Well, that's all for now, I am going to go to bed early because we have to get up AN HOUR EARLY tomorrow, even though the clock will read 8:00, it won't really be. ;P

UGH. PART TWO. [Mar. 9th, 2007|08:50 am]

[mood | UGH!!]

This morning I got up to take Reo outside, and as I stepped out the door, there's the huntsman spider, sitting dead underneath the window.

Wait.

Didn't Joe put the huntsman carcass into the small flower pot sitting by the door?

*checks*

AAAAHHHHHH there's a SECOND one!! EEP.

We're never getting visitors again!! Those afraid of spiders, DEFINITELY do NOT click!! )

The one we found yesterday was all still limber and stuff... I could use tweezers to spread out his legs so you guys can see exactly how big this sucker is. The other one was kinda dried up and its legs didn't move as easily.

How GROSS.

But at least they eat the palmetto bugs? *shudders*

Okay, getting ready for work now... :>

UGH!!! [Mar. 8th, 2007|08:25 pm]

[mood | UGH!!]

EWW. YUCK.

I didn't realize we have HUNTSMAN SPIDERS here in the northeast Florida area!

DO NOT CLICK if you are even slightly arachnaphobic! )

When I told the pest control guy about the widow spider we saw, he sprayed around there. What Joe found dead outside our door in the same area was THIS SUCKER. He's completely dead, otherwise there is NO FREAKING WAY I ever would have gone near it. As it was, I was scared it would slide down the envelope and onto my hand. UGH.

Joe thought it might be a wolf spider but I looked it up, and not quite. The markings were all wrong and the eyes were a different layout. I knew from looking at it that it wasn't a recluse - not only did it lack the "fiddle" but it also had all eight of its eyes on the front, in two horizontal rows, instead of two vertical rows running back the way that the recluse has.

It took me a while but I finally looked at a site with different photos of different Florida spiders... and of COURSE it has to be the huntsman.

Brenda, I have another hairy spider carcass for you to play with!!! UGH!!!!

:P
